What are Vanity Metrics: The Social Media Trap
Reading Time: 5 mins 30 sec
I get this question all the time when I’m chatting with clients. We’ll be reviewing their recent social media posts, and someone will always get excited and say, “Look! We got 10,000 views on that video!” And trust me, I get it. It’s a great feeling to see those numbers climb. It gives you that little dopamine hit and makes you feel like your hard work is paying off.
But then I have to be the one to ask the slightly awkward follow-up question: “Cool. How much revenue did it generate?”
‘Likes’ Don’t Pay the Bills’
Usually, there’s a bit of a pause. The room goes quiet. That’s because those 10,000 views are what we call vanity metrics in social media. They look absolutely fantastic on a monthly report, and they make everyone feel really proud of the content they’re putting out into the world. You might even show your family the viral post over Sunday dinner.
However, you can’t take likes to the bank. Mere impressions certainly don’t pay the bills. When I sit down with clients, my goal is always to move them away from celebrating those surface-level numbers and start looking at the data that actually keeps the lights on.
The danger of the vanity trap
Vanity metrics are a surprisingly dangerous trap in marketing. They include things like follower counts, raw page views, likes, and impressions. They are incredibly easy to track and even easier to obsess over. When you see your follower count growing, it feels like your community is expanding. You feel a sense of shared experience with all these new people engaging with your content.
The trouble begins when you start optimising your entire strategy just to get more of these superficial interactions. You might end up posting funny cat memes because they get a thousand likes, completely forgetting that you sell bespoke garden furniture. Your audience grows, but your sales stay completely stagnant.
If your marketing isn’t directly supporting sales or reducing customer churn, it’s basically just expensive art. It might look beautiful, and people might admire it, but it isn’t doing the heavy lifting you need it to do.
What I tell my clients to track instead
When I chat with clients about shifting their focus, I always recommend looking at actionable metrics. These are the numbers that tell you if your community is actually taking the steps you want them to take.
Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)
This is a massive one. How much are you actually spending to get a new paying customer? If a social media campaign gets you a million views but costs you £5,000 and brings in exactly zero sales, your CPA is terrible. On the flip side, a highly targeted post might only get 200 views, but if it brings in 10 paying customers at a very low cost, that is a massive win worth celebrating.
Lead quality and conversion rates
Having 500 people sign up for your free guide feels great, but how many of those people actually go on to buy something from you? Tracking lead quality means looking closely at who is engaging with your brand. I always remind clients that a small, highly engaged family of loyal customers is infinitely more valuable than a massive crowd of people who will never spend a penny. You want to track the percentage of people who see your content and actually convert into genuine leads or buyers.
Email click-through rates
Social media is a brilliant tool for building familiarity and starting conversations, but your email list is where you truly own the relationship. When you share a link on social media that drives people to your newsletter, the next thing to measure is how many of those people actually click the links inside your emails. A high email click-through rate tells you that your audience trusts you, values your advice, and is actively interested in your offers.
Let’s turn your social media into actual sales
Breaking away from the comfort of vanity metrics can feel a bit daunting at first. It means holding your marketing efforts accountable and asking the tough questions about what is actually working. But once you make that shift, the clarity you gain is incredibly rewarding. You stop stressing over the algorithm and start focusing on genuine connections and revenue.
