The PAS Copywriting Framework: A Simple Guide
Reading Time: 4 mins 57 sec
Ever stared at a blank page, willing the perfect words to appear? You know your product is fantastic, but getting that across to your customers feels like a huge challenge. If you’ve ever struggled to write copy that actually sells, you’re not alone.
And I might just have the secret weapon you’ve been looking for.
It’s called the PAS framework, and it’s a game-changer for anyone in the digital marketing space. Developed by copywriting expert Dr. Robert Bly and championed by marketing legend Gary Halbert, PAS stands for Problem, Agitation, Solution.
This simple, three-step formula is designed to connect with your audience on an emotional level and guide them towards your product. Let’s break down how you can use it to transform your copywriting and boost your conversions.
Step 1: Problem
The first step is to identify the core problem your customer is facing. The key here is to be specific and relatable. Don’t just talk about general issues; get right to the heart of what’s keeping them up at night. You need to show them that you truly understand their world.
Think about your ideal customer. What are their biggest frustrations? What obstacle is standing in their way?
For example, if you sell time-management software for small business owners, the problem isn’t just “not having enough time.” It’s more specific:
- “Are you constantly missing deadlines and letting clients down?”
- “Do you feel like you’re drowning in a sea of emails and to-do lists?”
By clearly defining the problem, you grab your reader’s attention and make them think, “Yes, that’s exactly how I feel!”
Step 2: Agitate
Now that you’ve identified the problem, it’s time to gently turn up the heat. The “Agitation” step is all about exploring the consequences and emotional impact of the problem. What happens if they don’t solve it? How does this issue affect their life, their business, or their well-being?
This isn’t about being cruel; it’s about building empathy. You’re reminding them why this problem is so frustrating and why they need to find a solution. Think of it as poking a bruise—you’re reminding them of the pain so they’re more motivated to heal it.
Sticking with our time-management software example, the agitation might look like this:
- “Every missed deadline chips away at your reputation. Soon, you’re losing valuable clients to more organised competitors.”
- “The stress of being constantly behind follows you home, ruining family dinners and making it impossible to switch off.”
This step makes the problem feel more urgent and real, creating a powerful emotional connection with your reader.
Step 3: Solution
After agitating the problem, your reader is primed for a solution. This is where you swoop in and present your product or service as the ultimate answer to their troubles. It’s the light at the end of the tunnel.
Clearly explain how your offering directly solves the problem you’ve just detailed. Focus on the benefits, not just the features. How will their life improve after using your product?
For our example:
- “Our software brings all your tasks, emails, and deadlines into one simple dashboard, so you always know what’s next.”
- “Imagine finishing your workday on time, feeling accomplished and ready to enjoy your evening, stress-free.”
By presenting your product as the clear, logical solution, you guide the customer towards making a purchase. You’ve shown them you understand their pain, and now you’re offering the perfect remedy.
Let’s Put It All Together
The PAS framework is a powerful tool in any copywriter’s arsenal. It’s a simple, effective way to structure your sales pages, emails, and social media posts for maximum impact. By focusing on your customer’s journey from problem to solution, you create copy that resonates, persuades, and converts.
Ready to give it a try? The next time you sit down to write, start with PAS. You might be surprised at how easily the words flow and how much better your results are.
